A Brief History of Murfreesboro TN

In 1811, the Tennessee State Legislature formed a committee to choose a new location for the Rutherford County seat. The site ultimately selected was a 60-acre plot of land owned by Captain William Lytle.

The Naming of Murfreesboro

The General Assembly decided to name the new town Cannonsburgh, as a tribute to Newton Cannon, a promising politician from Williamson County. However, at the request of Captain Lytle, the name was later changed to Murfreesboro after just one month. The naming was done in memory of Lytle’s close companion, Colonel Hardy Murfree. In 1817, Murfreesboro was officially recognized as a city by the State Legislature and in 1818, it was designated as the capital of Tennessee due to its convenient central location. However, Nashville once again became the state capital in 1826.

The Beginning

In the early years of Murfreesboro, it primarily thrived as an agricultural community, focusing on cultivating crops such as corn, cotton, and tobacco. By 1853, the Murfreesboro area boasted three colleges and numerous academies, earning it the nickname “Athens of Tennessee” from a religious reporter who visited. Despite the challenges of military occupation and the aftermath of the Civil War, education started to make a comeback in the early 1900s.

Education

In 1911, Middle Tennessee State Normal School, dedicated to the training of teachers, was established in Murfreesboro. It joined Tennessee College for Women, which had opened its doors in 1907. Currently, Middle Tennessee State University boasts a student population of over 23,000, making it the university with the highest number of undergraduate students in the state.

After the conclusion of World War II

Following WWII, Murfreesboro and Rutherford County experienced a shift from an agricultural-based economy to one centered around industry and manufacturing. Industrial growth has remained consistent since that time, making a significant contribution to a stable economy and remarkable expansion. Over the past decade, Murfreesboro has experienced significant growth in both residential and commercial sectors. The city has experienced significant population growth, with a 53.2% increase from 44,922 in 1990 to 68,816 in 2000. In 2017, Murfreesboro saw a significant increase in its population, now surpassing 140,000 residents.

Repaired my laptop in a timely manner at a good price. Was truthful about the fact the price may change should more work was needed. The part I needed at the time was inexpensive as well. Great place and very helpful.
