A Brief History of Nashville TN
James Robertson and a group of Wataugans established Nashville in 1779 under the original name Fort Nashborough, in honor of American Revolutionary War hero Francis Nash. Because of its advantageous location, accessibility as a river port, and subsequent status as a major railroad hub, Nashville expanded rapidly. With its incorporation as a city in 1806, Nashville was designated as the county seat of Davidson County, Tennessee. The city was designated the state capital of Tennessee permanently in 1843.
Preceding the emergence of secessionary sentiments throughout the South in 1860, antebellum Nashville had achieved remarkable prosperity. The city was highly sought after due to its strategic importance as a commercial port, which enabled it to exert control over vital railroad and river transportation routes. Nashville became the initial state capital to be besieged by Union forces in February 1862.
Nashville rapidly recovered from the severe economic straits it encountered during the Civil War.
The city regained its strategic shipping and trading position and established a robust manufacturing foundation within a short span of time. In the decades following the American Civil War in the late 19th century, Nashville experienced a period of renewed prosperity. A remnant of these prosperous economic times in the form of magnificent classical-style structures remains in the downtown area.
The emergence of the Grand Ole Opry in 1925, in conjunction with a publishing industry that was already flourishing, established Nashville in the position of “Music City USA.” By combining its government with that of Davidson County in 1963, Nashville became the first significant metropolitan area in the United States to do so. Urban renewal was a top priority for Mayor (now-Tennessee Governor) Phil Bredesen, who oversaw the construction or renovation of several city landmarks, including the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Public Library downtown, the Sommet Center, and Nissan Stadium. The city has undergone tremendous growth since the 1970s, especially during the economic boom of the 1990s.
