A Brief History of Sewanee, TN
Sewanee, founded in 1853, owes its beginnings to the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, completed in 1851. Named after Peter S. Sewanee, a Virginia lawyer and landowner, the town was developed with blocks and streets alongside his business partner, Ezekiel D. Sanford. Sewanee’s family owned land near Winchester, where the Hundred Oaks Castle now stands, and he also served on the railroad’s Board of Directors.
Sewanee was first incorporated in 1856, and after the Civil War, in 1868. Although no major battles occurred here, the Civil War greatly impacted the area, with Union forces briefly establishing headquarters in 1862 and skirmishes over control of the railroad. In 1863, Union troops destroyed sections of the railroad, burning Confederate supplies in Sewanee.
The “Four Mile Law” led to Sewanee’s unincorporation from 1885 to 1901, but it was re-chartered that year. The town experienced growth, reaching a population of around 1,000 by 1900. Terrill College was established in 1889 but closed in 1905.
Today, Sewanee’s major employers include Nissan Power Train Assembly, Kroger, and Henley Supply & Millworks. The town has two schools—Sewanee Elementary and North Middle School—and active community organizations, like the Lions Club, which has served residents since 1957. Sewanee’s parks offer walking trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas, making it a proud and vibrant community to live and work in.
Repaired my laptop in a timely manner at a good price. Was truthful about the fact the price may change should more work was needed. The part I needed at the time was inexpensive as well. Great place and very helpful.
